Wooden Core Trays – secure storage and organization of cores

If core samples in a clean, understandable and protected to keep a stable core of boxes made of wood is a good Standard. They are suitable for Exploration, Geology, mining, geotechnical , and wherever cores systematically stored, transported and archives are.

Advantage in everyday life: wooden core boxes are robust, easy to handle and support a clear sample logistics from the drilling site to the core warehouse.

Why Wooden Core Boxes?

  1. Rugged construction for tough applications
Of solid soft wood manufactured with a moisture resistant, multi-layer plywood floor for additional stability of form and protection.
  2. Suitable for samples in which the metal contact critically be, can
, In certain applications (e.g., in the case of sensitive ore/sample analyses) wood solutions part preferred to potential influences through metal container to avoid.
  3. Easy Handling & clear documentation of
Uniform dimensions facilitate stacking, storage systems and the storage shelf systems.
  4. Environmental aspect
Of environmentally friendly materials – 100 % recyclable (depending on the product).

Variants / sizes (NQ, HQ, PQ, SQ)

These wooden core boxes are common core/drilling diameter designed (NQ/HQ/PQ/SQ in) and provide a defined capacity per box.

StandardCore diameterCapacity CoresExternal Dimensions (L×W×H)
NQ47,6 mm5 x 1 m104 × 38 × 6 cm
HQ63.5 mm4 x 1 m104 × 38 × 7 cm
PQ85 mm3 x 1 m104 × 35 × 9 cm
SQ101 mm2 x 1 m104 x 27 x 16 cm

Optionally available in addition to a Wooden Core Tray

  1. Cover

  4. Markers / dividers for depth-markings
  5. Stacking / storage technology (shelves and pallet logic)

The most common sizes of drill cores at a Glance

In Geology and mining, these shortcuts on standardized diameter of cores, the so-called rope core drilling (Wireline Core Drilling) can be used.

The System was originally developed by the company Boart Longyear (Q-series), and the world is now an industry standard. The letter stands for the size, while the ‘Q’ for the ‘Wireline’-System (core system).

The dimensions originally defined in customs, but are usually expressed in millimeters. Here are the most common diameter from the smallest to the largest:

AbbreviationDrill core diameter (approx.)Borehole diameter (approx.)
BQ36.4 mm60.0 mm
NQ47,6 mm75,7 mm
HQ63.5 mm96,0 mm
PQ85,0 mm122,6 mm
SQ101,0 mm134,0 mm

Why are there so many different sizes of cores?

The choice of the diameter depends on several factors:

  • Geological stability: In very brittle or loose Rock to use larger diameter (HQ, PQ), so that the core does not collapse, and the structure is better preserved.
  • Depth of hole: the drill pipe for larger diameters, very hard, extremely deep holes often ‘telescoped’. It begins with PQ, further drilled deep with HQ and ends in the target depth in NQ.
  • Cost: Smaller holes (NQ) are usually cheaper and faster, but provide less Material for sample analyses.
  • Purpose: For metal ores often NQ from. If, however, require large amounts of Rock for metallurgical testing or geotechnical investigations (stability of tunnels), there is a resort to PQ or SQ.

Typical areas of use of wooden crates for cores

  1. Geological Exploration & mining (core logging, photo-documentation, archiving)
  2. Geotechnical Engineering / Soil Investigation (Project Storage, Deliveries, Long-Term Storage)
  3. Universities / Institutions (Sample Management, Teaching Collections, Research)
  4. Laboratories & Testing service provider (clean chain of traceability)
