Questions to core boxes

FAQs core boxes

1. What is a core box and why is it important for geological exploration?

A core box, in the English Core Tray is a container for the storage and Transport of core samples during geological drilling and exploration drilling. These soil samples are of crucial importance for the analysis and evaluation of geological formations, deposits of raw materials, and soil texture. The quality and integrity of the core samples often depends on the quality of the core boxes. They serve as the primary means for the storage and organization of core samples, which are later analyzed by geologists and researchers.

2. What are the factors you should consider in the selection of a core box?

There are several important factors that should be taken into account in the selection of a core box, including:

  • Size: diameter, length, and weight of the cores
  • Material: core boxes can be made from various materials such as metal, wood or plastic can be produced.
  • Resistance to temperature / resistance to weathering: The core box should be temperature extremes, and moisture can keep the integrity of the samples to obtain.
  • Durability and handling: The core box should be sturdy, but also easy to handle, both empty as well as filled with samples.
  • Storage and transportation: The core box should be stackable, and for transportation on pallets suitable to be a simple storage and handling to allow. Also, this should be a cover is closed.

3. What types of core boxes are there? And what are the pros and cons of each?

There are different types of core boxes, including metal, wood and plastic. Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages in terms of durability, handling, temperature resistance, and cost.

  • Metal boxes are sturdy, but can be temperature extremes, suspended and are difficult to handle.
  • Plastic crates are water-resistant, durable and easy to handle, can, however, be adapted so easily, such as wood.
  • Wooden crates are sturdy and easy to customize. Wood is a natural Material and can warp over time or deform. Wooden crates are susceptible to various environmental influences such as moisture, heat, and termites. Particularly in moist or humid environments wooden crates can be easily rot or pests, such as termites infest, what is at risk samples, the integrity of the core. In comparison to plastic crates wood crates are often heavier, which can make it difficult to Transport and handling. Due to a lack of teeth, these can Transport if necessary easier to tip over or slip.

4. How are ice Cores processed and transported?

After the completion of the registration process and the assignment of the depth of the ice Cores at the cutting station to cut, fit into standardized insulated shipping container, and placed in 1-Meter-long sections. The 1-Meter-long ice Cores are then inserted in polyethylene Layflat tubing with the relevant information and aluminum-coated cardboard tubes Packed. These tubes are placed in insulated core boxes, each of which can contain five pipes. The inserted in-between spaces around the pipes are filled with snow, in order to stabilize the nuclei, and a temperature data logger, in each Kernbox.

The Packed core boxes are then placed in a storage pit, and then in a frozen environment, transported. The core boxes are not opened again until they have arrived safely in the freezer of the NSF-ICF. The fully packaged core boxes can weigh to the depth of the core up to 60 kg and are fitted with temperature data loggers to monitor the stability of the sample during transport and storage. Currently we have no specific core boxes for ice Cores in the offer, would give us but need to find a solution to deal with, since we are good suppliers in the field of refrigerated transport have.

5. How to choose the right core box?

Choosing the right core box depends on the specific requirements of the project, including the environmental conditions, the storage and transport requirements, the Core diameter/length, the weight of the material, as well as the budget. It is important to compare different options and choose the best fit for the needs of the project.

6. Where to buy core boxes?
